Sterling Green™ Renewable Electricity
Frequently Asked Questions

If I sign up for Sterling Green™ Renewable Electricity with Agway Energy Services, how do I know I am supporting renewable resources?

Sterling Green™ is renewable electricity that is produced from New York based small hydroelectric facilities, wind and bioenergy plants like recovered methane from landfills.

What is the mix of resources I am supporting?

For 2003, Sterling Green™ Renewable Electricity is comprised of 40% New Wind, 30% small hydroelectric and 30% bioenergy, which is electricity made from recovered methane and green plants. All sources are located in New York State.

What is the current mix of power sources I currently support?

Coal 16%, Natural Gas 27%, Hydroelectric 16%, Nuclear 28%, Oil 10% and Other 3%.

If I choose Sterling Green™, is the power coming to my house from these renewable resources?

When you select Sterling Green™, you are asking Agway Energy Services to arrange for electricity from renewable resources to be placed on the grid on your behalf. There is no way of knowing which electrons actually reach your house. Once that power is placed on the grid, it mixes with all other power sources. When you turn on a light switch, you pull power off the grid from this mixture.

However, your money goes directly to New York based renewable power generators and not the generators of nuclear, fossil fuel or coal. In addition, you and all Agway Energy Services customers who select Sterling Green™ are helping to clean up the power grid by displacing other sources. Sterling Green™ customers are also helping to bring more sources of renewable energy into production, such as the Fenner Wind project.

Why does Sterling Green™ cost more?

The additional 1.5 cents per kWh helps make up the gap between the price of non-renewable conventional generation and that of cleaner renewable resources. The difference for the average household is less than 30 cents a day and is a concrete way for people to help change the way power is produced by supporting cleaner New York based renewable resources.

I want to support renewable electricity, but how can I lower my cost?

The easiest way to lower your electricity cost is to use energy more efficiently. New York state has created a web site with many low cost, no cost steps you can take to lower your energy use, save money and reduce your environmental impact. This site can be found at http://www.getenergysmart.org/
